As soon as N or W subway trains reach above the underground and approach Queensboro Plaza stop, you'll notice an industrial landscape of Long Island City, lit by open light source. While the train keeps running above the ground, the scenery gradually shifts to a relatively relaxed and flat landscapes of Astoria, the town I've resided for the past 12 years, which is about 1/3 of my whole life. I was born and bred in Kawasaki, Japan. Kawasaki is a city, which is located in the west of Center Tokyo. I find Astoria to be similar to where I grew up, in a way. There's a sense of "real life". No pretention, but a quality of daily life is here. I shop daily for fresh produces at a vegetable store that are open for 24 hours, a fish market that sells little neck clams for $6.50 for a dozen, or a greek bakery where I can get a fantastic spinach pie. I find Astoria is rooted to the everyday-life for the working-class people from all over the world.
